MEXICO CITY, Calif. (AP) — A Mexican-Americans' pharmacy company says it is planning to introduce a cheaper version of a popular prescription drug to the U. S. market.
The Food and Drug Administration said on Friday it is exploring the idea of marketing a generic version of Cialis, another popular erectile dysfunction drug.
The new drug, which is sold by Eli Lilly, is a generic version of the antidepressant tadalafil, Lilly said in a statement Friday.
The generic version is expected to be available in the U. on May 29, an FDA advisory panel said. Eli Lilly said it had approved the drug as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, but that it would not cover the cost of the brand name version.
The panel said that Lilly's decision to market a generic version of the drug is likely to reduce the amount of money that it can save on the brand name drug. The generic version could save consumers about $500 million, or roughly $1.2 million a year.
The FDA said Lilly's statement was a "mild explanation" to the pharmacy company. It declined to comment on the price of the generic drug or on its plans for the new drug.
A Lilly spokesman said the company is "reviewing the market for the generic version of Cialis and is in discussions with pharmaceutical companies about possible generic versions."
Tadalafil is sold under the brand name Viagra. Cialis is sold under the generic name Cialis.
Lilly's pharmacy business is based in San Jose, California, and has about 2,500 pharmacies.
The company said it is working on a generic version of the drug that would be available in the U. The drug is also being developed to treat patients with erectile dysfunction.
